LV mass and geometry
LV mass by the linear method, indexed to body surface area, with relative wall thickness and the geometry pattern it adds up to.
ASE/EACVI 2015 chamber quantification
How it's calculated
Formulas
LV mass (g) = 0.8 × 1.04 × [(IVSd + LVIDd + PWd)³ − LVIDd³] + 0.6, with measurements in cm (mm ÷ 10) LV mass index = LV mass ÷ BSA Relative wall thickness = 2 × PWd ÷ LVIDdGeometry
- Normal mass, RWT 0.42 or less: normal geometry.
- Normal mass, RWT above 0.42: concentric remodeling.
- High mass, RWT above 0.42: concentric hypertrophy.
- High mass, RWT 0.42 or less: eccentric hypertrophy.
| LV mass index (g/m²) | Normal | Mild | Moderate | Severe |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Women | 43–95 | 96–108 | 109–121 | ≥ 122 |
| Men | 49–115 | 116–131 | 132–148 | ≥ 149 |
The linear method assumes a normally shaped ventricle; with regional wall motion abnormalities or distorted geometry, use 2D or 3D methods. BSA by Mosteller. Lang RM, et al. J Am Soc Echocardiogr 2015;28:1–39.
